Wooden Puzzles
On this site we have been talking about enduring toys and children’s equipment. Wooden puzzles definitely fall under this category. Since our Grandchildren have been toddlers, we have always had lots of wooden puzzles available.
Wooden Puzzles for Toddlers
Wooden Puzzles for toddlers are made with different shapes and different themes. They usually allow the child to match the shape and color to a correct cut out area on the board. Many of them have educational opportunities. They vary from numbers or the alphabet to the animals on a farm. They help to promote fine muscle skills, eye hand coordination, problem solving skills, and a sense of accomplishments.
Numbers Sound Puzzle – 21 Pieces
This Numbers Sound Puzzle makes sounds when the number is placed in the correct spot. Double digits are one piece so the child will not be looking for the second piece. Because the board will talk even if a wrong number is tried in a place it works best with parental participation. That being said there is definitely opportunity for children to play with it by themselves.

See-Inside Alphabet Peg Puzzle – 26 pieces
Pictures under the letters help to associate the letter with an object. The easy grasp pegs make it helpful for small hands.

Shapes Sound Puzzle – 9 Pieces
This is a good puzzle for young toddlers as there are only nine shapes and there are pegs for easy handling. Like many of these puzzles if there is parental participation the child will learn faster and get more satisfaction from being able to solve it quickly.

Jigsaw Puzzles in a Box – Pets
These puzzles in a box come in a number of themes – pets, wild animals, farm animals, zoo animals, sea life, vehicles, fanciful friends, etc. We had one of these box puzzle sets and it was used over and over again. One of the skills our Grandchildren had to learn was fitting the puzzle back into the slots of the box. This often seemed to be much harder than solving the puzzle.

Puzzles for Pre-scholars

Puzzles for Pre-scholars
As the children get older they need more of a challenge. Melissa and Doug have a number of excellent wooden puzzles that are perfect for this. In our family we had several of these wonderful puzzles. In our case we had themes more directed to girls however our Grandsons did hesitate to play with them.
Under the Sea Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle
This puzzle has 24 pieces that fit into a wooden frame. This is a nice step from the easier ones where one piece is put into a predesigned shape. As there is no image to follow this puzzle requires the children to figure out how the pieces fit together to make the picture.
Under the Sea Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle
Dinosaur Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle
This also has 24 pieces and provides the same level of challenge as the Under Sea puzzle. Both of these provide a learning opportunity about dinosaurs or sea creatures.

Fairy Fantasy Jigsaw Puzzle
This Fairy Fantasy Jigsaw Puzzle is a step up with 48 pieces. It is a lovely puzzle for children who are fascinated with fairies. Great colors enhance the fantasy theme.

Ballet Performance Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle
This Ballet Performance Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle lived in our house for years. It was played with over and over again. I remember how tricky it was to sort out on what side the rose pieces were to be placed. The other interesting part was the shoes and legs. Maybe they went with this dancer or maybe they went with another. Remember there was no image to follow.

Mermaid Fantasea Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle
The Mermaid Fantasea Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle was the most difficult of all the Mellissa and Doug wooden puzzles that we owned. The colours were great and the combination of the mermaids and the sea creatures gave an interesting image of fantasy and reality. Many pieces of the intricate art made it difficult to solve which piece would fit with the next.
Mermaid Fantasea Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle – 48 pieces
Our Grandchildren had so many hours of play with the Melissa and Doug wooden puzzles that we can confidently recommend them. We loved the colors, the imaginative images, the sturdy pieces, and the boards that held them. They were easy to store and to keep all the pieces together.
